What not to do on your test paper...

As it is reading and writing assessment time for us this week folks, here's what NOT to do on your reading test (but it made me chuckle anyway...)

Welcome back!

Hope everybody had a great half term, I don't know about you lot, but I'm not sure I am used to being back at school again! Today's Blogs to check out are Becky's and Chloe's - please have a look and drop them a friendly comment or two.. For those who have yet to post on their Blogs, please go through my Blog to have a look at the previous Blogs I have linked to - Check them out and comment on a poem! Tell them what you like about one of their poems!

Right now I'm looking forward to England's opening Euro 2012 fixture against France and in the patriotic spirit of this I have found a nice little poem that covers this English spirit.. It is by a man called Eric Blair, written for a newspaper at the start of the First World War to try and persuade young men to join the army. Eric Blair was also a famous author, though he wrote books under a pseudonym - George Orwell , many novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm.

Awake! Young Men of England

Oh! give me the strength of the lion,
The wisdom of Reynard the fox,
And then I’ll hurl troops at the Germans,
And give them the hardest of knocks.
Oh! think of the War lord’s mailed fist,
That is striking at England to-day:
And think of the lives that our soldiers
Are fearlessly throwing away.
Awake! oh you young men of England,
For if, when your Country’s in need
You do not enlist by the thousand,
You truly are cowards indeed.

Euro 2012 poem

Afternoon all, Jack and Alex can now be added to the Finished list, well done fellas! Everyone else, please have a look at those Blogs that are finished for inspiration and to comment on each other's poems to tell them a poem or two that you particularly liked the sound of.

As we are into Day Two of Euro 2012, I've included a poem below that looks forward to the competition.

The tension mounts
Will the Dutch score many goals?
Will the Poles amount to much?
Will the Spanish crash out bitterly in Ukraine?
Will the Czechs upset the seeds?
Will the Swedes be nervous wrecks?
And will Italy slowly vanish down the drain?

Will van Persie start to fester?
Will Iniesta show no mercy?
Will Duff have a swagger in his stride?
Will Samaras give it welly?
Will Balotelli hog the cameras?
Will Agger have enough to turn the tide?

Oh yes we will be blessed
with a month-long footie-fest
exploding like a massive supernova.
There'll be referees that blunder
and dreams that fall asunder
oh please do not disturb me till it's over.

Pandas // competition time etc

Hi all, hope you are all having a good Half Term. A few more posts I see, we can add Abbi to the Finished list so please have a look at her Blog and maybe add a comment or two if you like the sound of some of her poems! That's the kind of commenting spirit I want to see on here.

Writing this post from Edinburgh, just saw the pandas: AMAZING.

Beautiful creatures, even if they were fast asleep for our 10 minute viewing slot. Though their Twitter account - http://www.twitter.com/edinburghzoo - showed Tian Tian eating bamboo outside about 90 minutes later hmmm not fair!

COMPETITION: In the spirit of my day out at the zoo, I have a few panda-related goodies to give away... for the person who comments in this post with the best animal-related poem or short story of their own creation. I have a panda cuddly toy, a stick of rock and a panda postcard to give away.

OTHER NOTES:
I still can't find several blogs so if your blog does NOT appear on the BlogList to the right I am not sure what your web addresses are, PLEASE TELL ME!
Off the top of my head these Blogs include Suzie, Michael, Tyler and Bailey but there may be others.
Remember to add my page to your Reading List or Follow me to keep up with any posts you may need.

FINAL NOTE: These Blogs are to be used in place of your English books, therefore please stick to the same standards of proofreading, spelling, punctuation etc that you would in your books. It may be an idea to write out any posts in a Word document and copy and pasting it across so you can use spellcheck. Standard English throughout!
AND I plan to show off your Blogs to Mr McLindon when we return to school and I love the fact that many of you have customised your pages and really made them your own. If you haven't already, have a play and give yourself a nice profile pic that DOESN'T have a picture of you in. This can be anything, but ask yourselves: What would Mrs Stahler say if she saw my profile pic? Therefore, I would ask that Jess and Maisie reconsider their pics, otherwise they might distract from your FAB Blogs! =)

7D Moodle Page - your work on the net!

7D Moodle Page

Click the above link to see a preview look at the 7D Moodle page. This is a section on the school website where each class will have their own page. Click the tabs to have a look at some of your work that has been uploaded so you can show off your work. Work included:
*Death of Duncan Macbeth newspaper front covers
*Save the Animals leaflets
*Animal haiku
*Olympic Poems

Horrid Homophone Penalty Shootout game - Also, don't know if this will work yet at this stage, but eventually you will be able to log into the Deyes High Moodle site and be able to play games like this - the difference between this one and the game we have played in class is that your score will be saved so we can keep a league table of how you all have got on.

Weekend Blog Roundup

Weekend roundup: Well done for those people who have got into the Blogging spirit already - Jessica and Rebecca have their anthologies done and dusted with all 10 poems posted - there seem to be some recurring themes I think?! Check those two Blogs by clicking on their names or find their blogs on the list on the right hand side. If you like their choices, please comment on their poems and share your thoughts on them - sometimes it's good to know that others are checking out your page! =)
(I'm sure they will then do the same for your poetry choices!)

If you are looking for inspiration, Maisie and Chloe McD have also made a great start to their poetry Blogging so their Blogs are well worth a look. Although, I am a bit disappointed that Maisie's "I love Dogs" haiku did not make the cut...

A few other tips for your Blogging:

*Please type the poem category and title of the poem in the Title Box at the top when you are composing your post. This helps it appear properly in my Bloglist.

*Take care to make sure that your poem is set out as it is where you have found - the look of a poem on the page is vitally important - poets decide just how they want to set it out: where to start a new stanza, what words they want to have at the start of each line etc so try to make sure it looks exactly the same on your Blogs

Happy Blogging!

Blog stuff

Now then folks, after today's lesson the majority of you have got your Blogs up and running and have posted your first post - an introduction saying who you are and what you are going to be using your blog for.

On the right hand side of this page you will see all of your Blogs (I hope) if you do not then please comment on this post with a link to your blog and I wi add it on. You will also see your names on the bottom of the page so if you are not there then please alert me to this and I will sort it out.

Remember: by the next time I see you all poems must be uploaded, with a picture to illustrate the poem that you have found or created as well as a short explanation of the poem ie. why you have chosen it.

Have a fun and safe half term peeps only 5 and and a half weeks to go now and you will completed your first year of High School: Congrats!

Mr H =)
